Message From The President

    John Patrick O’Hara

We are all still mourning, and trying to coming to terms with the sudden loss of John. John’s influence, guidance and efforts to the business owners, Brookhaven Town Officials, staffs and community members he knew, worked with, was friends with, and no doubt helped on one occasion or another, throughout his career is immeasurable.

John, along with other past and present board members, was instrumental in getting the then Sill’s Industrial Park Association started. Although John only became the president of the Brookhaven Industrial Group Association some five years ago, he always had a large hand in moving the organization forward, trying to make it better, stronger and larger, in order to better serve the businesses within the association.

In 2008 the board agreed that expanding the Sills Industrial Park Association to allow for a larger number of members, encompassing a larger geographic area would be our next step. John’s passion was a huge motivating factor in this expansion, including some “door to door” work speaking out about the advantages of becoming a member of our association. Thus, the Sill’s Industrial Park Association became the Brookhaven Industrial Group Association.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire B.I.G. membership, we thank John for all of his efforts, contributions and presence in our business community. We will all miss his presence very much.

    • 2003   Founding Board member of the original Sill’s Industrial Park Association.

In speaking to the countless mourners at the services held for John, so many had such warm and kind memories to share.  Many recalled how John always was able to steer them in the right direction with Brookhaven Town Officials in regards to a new project, building expansion or re-build project.  People brought up how John saved them thousands of dollars by reminding them to grief their tax abatements….and how to do it.    Many times he helped us navigate the confusing and clogged hallways at town hall.  Others recalled his desire to increase the Brookhaven Industrial Group’s size, in order to make the association stronger, and to create a larger presence in the Brookhaven Township.  John always wanted to continually improve the association, and provide more to the membership.  He was always concerned about who would be speaking, and what content would they bring to a meeting.    Many times, when we were battling against the building of the Caithness Power Plant, John would attend some powerful meetings at town hall, and we were always amazed at “just how many people knew John over there!”  He seemed like the“Mayor”of Town Hall, all greeting him with a smile, a hello or a nod.

We remember those fantastic, wonderful chocolate chip cookies that John used to hand out at the holidays to, what seemed like everybody he ever did business with, in Yaphank and Medford…and beyond.  The common theme that continually surfaced when talking to his friends and family was his relentless desire to give to people….to help people out…and to be respected.  In witnessing the huge turnout, the grief and shock, the confusion and pain, that was so visible at his services, it was evident that John totally succeeded in his mission.

We will all miss our dear friend, leader, and colleague on so many levels. The board, and the entire membership will always remember John O’Hara for his indelible mark on the Brookhaven Industrial Association and it’s membership, and the countless business people he helped and serviced throughout his career.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to John’s wonderful wife, Lorraine, the entire O’Hara family and the many loving friends, business associates and colleagues that John amassed during his lifetime.

He will be greatly and forever missed by so many.

  • Dear Prospective Member:

Established in 2003, The Sills Industrial Park Association (SIPA) is pleased to announce that we have changed association's name to the Brookhaven Industrial Group Inc. (BIG) to better symbolize our planned expansion. Once consisting of those companies in the industrial park only, we are now encompassing a larger geographical area. With this name change, a myriad of new possibilities consisting of new and exciting projects and better environmental services are possible for us.  As the Brookhaven Industrial Group, we will address our requests and concerns to the Town of Brookhaven to preserve the value of our properties with a larger and stronger voice.

Further benefits of membership are networking with business owners for group acquisition of products and services, inter-company trading opportunities as well as having a voice in the future of our businesses in the Town of Brookhaven. BIG has guest speakers, from various organizations, speak at our meetings to educate and inform our members about products and services available to us. Companies such as Optimum/Cablevision, Verizon, Suffolk County Police Department, various service companies as well as local Town Officials have spoken to our group.

We would be delighted if you would contemplate joining our group. So plan to attend our next meeting to see for yourself how we can work together. The annual membership dues are only  $100.
